Tomorrow,
there will an important hearing about the final year college exams in Supreme
Court. A group of students is in court with demand of cancellation of exams due
to corona pandemic. Students are challenging the revised guidelines of Union
Grant Commission (UGC) that has declared the final year exam compulsory to
conduct.
Students
of various states are protesting against the exams through social media to get
relief from government. Students are giving excuse of corona virus pandemic to
cancel examinations. The total confirmed corona cases are almost 2.7 million
and total active cases are almost 6 lakh seventy two thousands in India. This
is huge figure and is proof of worst pandemic situation. Despite this worse
situation, UGC on the recommendation of Ministry of Human Resource Development (now
known as Education ministry), issued a notification with order of conduction of
compulsory terminal semester exams. However, UGC has given relief to first and
second year students or first year students of PG, as University can take
decision about them to conduct or not conduct exams keeping the situation and resources
in mind. Mostly universities are promoting these students without exams.
In
Supreme Court, last hearing was on 14 August in which two out of four
petitioners have put their views and remaining two will debate tomorrow. This hearing could be final hearing and court
can take final decision. However, Today a petition about to postpone NEET and
JEE has been dismissed by SC. It is big setback to students.
It
is also important to mention here that student organizations have different
views over this issue. Congress’ student front NSUI is demanding for
cancellation of exams. NSUI is protesting with demand of mass promotion but
failed to explain stand about the future discrimination on the basis of degree.
BJP’s sympathizer ABVP is in fully support of UGC and states that exams are
important to students. Student organization World Student Union also protesting
with social media and has organized many sessions of India’s first students’
virtual rally. WSU has wrote a letter to UGC and Education ministry to not
conduct offline exams and use the options as open book exam, report making or
assignment work. However, WSU has demanded to mass promotion if state governments
or universities are not able to conduct examinations using above options.
Now
it will be important to see what court takes decision tomorrow.
